a start-up for milk producers and dairies based in Kiel
We develop IT solutions for dairy farmers to support milk price hedging and digital communication with their dairies. The company was founded in April 2018 with the support of the Department of Agricultural Economics at Kiel University of Applied Sciences.
Our goal...
..is to simplify milk price hedging for milk producers through futures contracts, thus making exchange-based price hedging more practical.
In addition, KUHdo is currently working on solutions to provide farmers with quick, easy, and efficient access to the futures market – currently in collaboration with brokers, dairies, milk traders, and/or milk producer associations.
With “KUHdo Trading,” we offer dairies the opportunity to offer price hedging to their suppliers. Unlike other providers, thanks to “KUHdo Trading,” dairy farms can be offered various hedging instruments (e.g., butter, skimmed milk powder, BLE prices, and soon also fixed prices).
The best part: Even retaining price increase potential is possible with some hedging instruments!

The future for businesses
In the future, it will become increasingly necessary for farms that wish to invest or have a high proportion of borrowed capital, wage labor, and leased land to address milk price hedging in their business planning.
It will no longer be so important to obtain the highest price in the short term, but rather to reach the next high price phase in a planned manner.

ARNE BARTELT
After completing my training as an IT specialist, I began studying computer science at Kiel University. During my studies, Frederik introduced me to the company KUHdo. I decided to become part of the KUHdo team. In addition to my studies, my job at KUHdo is to implement the planned content and functions of the web app using programming techniques. I’m also responsible for IT support.
If you don’t find me in front of my computer, you’ll most likely find me at the workbench. If I’m not there, it’s likely that I’m either cooking in the kitchen or on my way to the nearest coffee machine.

After completing my apprenticeship, I was independently responsible for rapeseed meal logistics at ADM Hamburg AG. I left this position to begin studying agriculture. I gained practical experience in agriculture on a German and a US dairy farm. I am one of the founders of KUHdo.
In my free time, I often ride my John Deere-painted Moto Guzzi on the country roads of northern Germany.

FREDERIK KARNATH
After completing my apprenticeship, I was independently responsible for rapeseed meal logistics at ADM Hamburg AG. I left this position to begin studying agriculture. I gained practical experience in agriculture on a German and a US dairy farm. At KUHdo, my professional background means I’m primarily responsible for the commodity futures market and sales.
In my free time, I often ride my John Deere-painted Moto Guzzi on the country roads of northern Germany.

ANDRE SCHULZ
I joined the KUHdo team while studying computer science at Kiel University of Applied Sciences. I completed my studies as a web developer with the active support of KUHdo. Since the subsequent acquisition, I’ve been working full-time on developing new and maintaining existing technical features. You’ll mainly find me on the frontend, with occasional forays into the backend or the web app infrastructure.
If you don’t find me in front of the computer, you’ll probably find me at the gym, surfing on the water, or reading in the park or in my armchair at home.

Nicolas Jessen
I first became aware of the KUHdo project very early on during my computer science studies, when it came to laying the software foundation for the project. After initially passing this role on to Arne, whom I knew very well from my studies, due to time constraints, a few years and projects later I actually found myself joining the active KUHdo team, where I now work diligently as a software developer. I have since earned my Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and am currently continuing my Master’s degree alongside work.
Outside of KUHdo and university, I love tinkering with my old cars, welding together crazy motorized constructions, or playing the piano. I also do a lot of sports whenever time permits, and when the weather is nice, I enjoy cycling across Schleswig-Holstein on my 1955 Diamant racing bike.

After completing my agricultural studies in Rendsburg, my affinity for commodity futures markets led me to meet Frederik, who then introduced me to KUHdo. After completing my master’s degree in agriculture in Neubrandenburg, Frederik contacted me, and I’ve been working for KUHdo ever since. My responsibilities primarily involve supporting (pilot) customers and product development, thanks to my agricultural background.

LENNART RICK
It all started with an apprenticeship as an electronics technician. Passionate about technology, I studied electrical engineering. After some time in this industry, I wanted to reorient myself, which ultimately led me to software development. Since the beginning of 2022, I’ve been part of the KUHdo team. With and without a computer, you can often find me outdoors.

I’ve been working as a software developer at KUHdo since summer 2022 while studying computer science. Nico, whom I knew from my first semester, brought me on board. I’ve already gained some part-time experience in software development before, and I’m excited to be able to closely accompany a company through its development process this time – a very exciting opportunity. My responsibilities at KUHdo currently focus primarily on the web app, but who knows where else I’ll end up.
Outside of work and studies, I enjoy gardening, playing the piano, doing various crafts, or simply reading a good book on the couch.

Funding and awards
The company was supported by the German Agricultural Innovation Partnership (DIP) in a first funding project until May 2021 and has been supported in a second project since September 2021.
Previously, KUHdo was supported as a start-up project “Simplified Milk Price Assurance” from August 1, 2017, to July 31, 2018, by the EXIST start-up grant.
The founding idea (Bachelor’s thesis, Kiel University of Applied Sciences) was awarded the EEX Excellence Award 2017: “Development of a price hedging tool for milk producers based on milk futures contracts”.
